Bearcat Brief 1-22

By Justin Horowitz

After the season's first three-game losing skid, the Bearcats rebounded with a 66-59 win Monday night over Hartford to re-capture first place in America East.

BU erased a 13-point deficit with 12 minutes to go to earn the win.

D.J. Rivera led the way with 24 points, the 12th time he's gone over 20 points this season.

But it was Rivera's larger-than-life alley-oop slam late in the game that put the exclamation point on the victory...

A play made between Rivera and his childhood friend from Philadelphia, Malik Alvin.

"Me and D.J. have been playing together since we were nine years old so I kind of figured out what he wants to do when we got a fast break," says Alvin.

"I think I was kind of mad at the court for that one," says Rivera. "I got up real high. I seen in his eyes that he was going to throw it and I just went up and got it."

The Bearcat women improved to 2 and 2 in America East Sunday afternoon in a 91-86 shootout win against Stony Brook.

Andrea Holmes broke the school's single-game freshman scoring record with 32 points, the second most points ever scored in a game by a Bearcat.

Holmes has been named the conference's Rookie of the Week for her performance.

For the season, the Memphis, Tennessee native has started all 17 games and is second on the team in scoring and steals, and first in assists.

"At first it was a little hard because, a new freshman coming in there's a lot of pressure but the team stayed behind me, the coaches stayed behind me 100-percent and gave me direction and I just try to do what they say and I've been successful," says Holmes.

And that's this week's Bearcat Brief.
