B-Mets Hammered by Portland 12-4

Starter Jose Sanchez got roughed up for nine runs in three innings and Portland pounded out a season-high 18 hits on their way to a 12-4 win over Binghamton.

After a scoreless first inning, Sanchez allowed the first seven he faced in the second frame to reach, bringing five men across the plate to score and handing the Sea Dogs a 5-0 lead.

The B-Mets would get a few of those runs back in the third inning when Shawn Bowman snuck a bases-loaded single through the right side to drive in Emmanuel Garcia and Josh Thole against southpaw starter Felix Doubront.

The single was part of a 2-4 day for Bowman, driving in three of Binghamton’s four runs.

That, however, was as close as the B-Mets would get.

In the fourth inning, Portland blew it open with six runs, capped off by Jorge Jimenez’ three-run home run off reliever Tim McNab to make the score 11-2.

Jimenez had a spectacular game going 4-5 with three RBI.

Binghamton (4-4) would scrape a few more runs across down the stretch, but it was not enough to offset the early damage done by Portland’s hitter.

Sea Dog first baseman Lars Anderson joined Jimenez with a four-hit day going 4-6 to run his average over .300.

Doubront was the winning pitcher in the game, tossing five innings of two-run ball to improve to 1-0.

Garcia and Thole extended their respective hitting streaks in the game.

Garcia went 1-4 with a double in the third to run his streak to eight games, and 10 games if reverting to last year’s final two games.

Thole pushed his average over .400 with a 3-4 day scoring two runs.

The finale of the four-game set will get underway at 1:05 PM.

Former B-Met infielder, turned pitcher, RHP Ryan Coultas will start for Binghamton and Portland counters with Japanese RHP Junichi Tazawa.
