Bearcat Volleyball Draws Top-Ranked Penn State

America East Champion Binghamton (15-15) has drawn top-seeded Penn State in the upcoming 2009 NCAA Volleyball Tournament.

Penn State (32-0) will host Binghamton at Rec Hall on Friday, December 4 at 7:30 p.m. in the NCAA First Round.

The Nittany Lions will enter the match as the two-time defending national champions, the number one overall seed in the tournament, the number one ranked team in the AVCA Top 25 and also on a 96-match winning streak.

Penn State earned an automatic berth by winning the Big Ten Championship over Michigan on Saturday.

Binghamton earned an automatic berth by defeating top-seeded Albany in the America East Championship last weekend.

Binghamton last won its conference title in 2005, and were also seeded against Penn State in the NCAA First Round.

The Nittany Lions won that match 3-0.

The winner of the Penn State-Binghamton match will face the winner of Army and Penn in the NCAA Second Round on Saturday.

The winner of the Penn State first and second round NCAA site will head to the Gainesville Regional on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 11-12.

The Penn State site winner will play the site winner from Gainesville, Fla.

The winners from each of the four Regional sites (Gainesville, Fla., Stanford, Calif., Omaha, Neb. and Minneapolis, Minn.) advance to the NCAA National Semifinal, which will be held on Thursday, Dec. 17 at the St. Pete Times Forum in Tampa, Fla. with the National Championship match set for Saturday, Dec. 19.
