Buffalo, NY (WBNG Binghamton) The mantra this time of year is "survive and advance." Syracuse put the emphasis on "advance" on Thursday by handling 14th seed Western Michigan 77-53 at the First Niagara Center in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

After struggling to find his shot over the last month, SU sophomore guard Trevor Cooney exploded for 18 points to lead the Orange. Fellow sophomore Jerami Grant tossed in 16, while Tyler Ennis added 16 as well.

Syracuse never trailed against the Broncos in front of a very pro-Orange crowd. The only tie in the game came at 2-2 early in the first half.

The Orange advances to play 11th seed Dayton in Saturday's Round of 32.

The Flyers surprised in-state rival Ohio State in a 60-59 thriller to open up Thursday's slate of NCAA Tournament games.

The game time for Saturday's Syracuse-Dayton contest is still yet to be announced.
