The Binghamton women’s lacrosse team fell to visiting No. 12/13 Cornell 17-8, Tuesday afternoon in a non-conference matchup from the Bearcats Sports Complex. The Big Red (10-4) more than doubled the shot production of the Bearcats (3-12), outshooting Binghamton 35-16. Junior Kimberly McGeever led BU with two goals and two assists.

Cornell burst out of the gates in the contest’s first ten minutes using its high-powered offense to take a 5-1 advantage. After Binghamton knotted the game at one on a feed from freshman Alex Fisher to fellow classmate Emma Hayes-Hurley, Cornell used a 4-0 run to take control of the game early.

Binghamton, not backing down, responded by netting three of the game’s next four goals to trim the deficit to two at the 15:13 mark. Junior Katherine Hunsberger began the scoring spurt ending the Cornell run after firing a free position attempt by the Big Red goalie. McGeever kept the momentum on BU’s side when she found senior Lis Zuern less than two minutes later beating the goalie stick side. Following McGeever’s team leading 29th assist, she took matters into her own hands using a scoring dodge from behind the net to beat the Cornell goalkeeper low.

Following the 3-1 Binghamton run, the Big Red made a goalie change. Binghamton had an opportunity to slice the deficit one on the cold goalie after winning the ensuing draw control, but a pair of BU shots sailed wide on the next offensive possession and the Big Red pounced on the 50-50 ball. Cornell outhustled Binghamton to the tune of a 20-6 ground ball advantage. Cornell ended the first half on a 4-0 run to take a 10-4 lead into the locker room.

Binghamton opened the second half scoring as a Cornell turnover led to Hayes-Hurley finding McGeever cutting down the middle of the eight-meter for the score. BU trailed by five just four minutes into the second half, but that would be as close as the Bearcats would get. Cornell countered BU’s goal with a 3-0 run to take a commanding 13-5 lead with 18:05 to play.

The Bearcats, determined not to go away easily, received goals from freshman Renee Kiviat and Zuern, but it wasn’t enough as Cornell used another 3-0 run to hold a 17-7 advantage with just over three minutes remaining. Hunsberger ended the scoring as she sliced through the Big Red defense to net her 28th goal of the season, creating the final score of 17-8.

Hunsberger, who tied the BU single game record for draw controls with a career-high nine, also broke the program’s single season record for draws (44) set by Kelsey Pieper. The junior from Cortland, N.Y. now has 46 draw controls in 2012. Along with her nine draws, Hunsberger added a two goals and an assist.

Binghamton concludes its season on Saturday, April 28 at 12 p.m. by welcoming first-place Boston University to the Bearcats Sports Complex for Senior Day. The Bearcats will honor seniors Lis Zuern, Lauren Lukefahr, Brittany Stufano and Allie Sabitus prior to the game.
