Burlington, VT (WBNG Binghamton)

Junior F/C Lauren Buschmann poured in a game-high 18 points to steer the Catamounts (8-9, 2-2 AE) to a 69-48 victory over Binghamton (8-9, 2-2 AE) Wednesday night at Patrick Gymnasium. On the strength of a 19-2 run over an 8:22 span, Vermont shot an impressive 46 percent (15-of-32) from the field.

After falling behind 25-15, Binghamton displayed solid fight ending the half on a 12-0 run that was guided by senior guards Orla O’Reilly and Andrea Holmes who combined for 21 of their 28 points in the first half.

The Bearcats began the second half ahead 27-25, but UVM stormed out to a quick 6-0 run propelled by a pair of lay-ups from America East’s leading scorer Buschmann. After trading baskets, two free-throws from junior forward Kara Elofson cut the Catamount lead down to 39-38 at the 13:53 mark, but that’s as close as BU would get. For the remaining portion of the game, Vermont powered its way to a 30-10 run to close out the game. The Bearcats were stymied in the second half, shooting just 25 percent from the field.

“They upped their defensive intensity in the second half and we didn’t respond well,” head coach Nicole Scholl said. “Vermont started to get hot from beyond the three-point arc. They hit a few back-to-back, which seemed to be a solid turning point in the game.”

Holmes scored a game-high 14 points, while contributing five rebounds and four assists. Orla O’Reilly added 12 points, all of which came in the first half. Senior forward Viive Rebane tallied eight points and a team-high seven boards for the Bearcats who fell to 2-2 in conference play.
