Vestal, NY (WBNG Binghamton)
Ebone Henry sank a pair of free throws with six seconds left in regulation, leading Albany (13-9, 7-1 AE) to a 37-36 win over Binghamton (10-11, 4-4 AE) in an America East women’s basketball game on Wednesday night at the Events Center. The loss snapped the Bearcats two-game winning streak.
Henry, who finished with 15 points, 12 rebounds and a pair of steals was fouled underneath the basket. After she converted both free throws, the Bearcats game-winning attempt at the buzzer was no good.
“It’s disappointing,” head coach Nicole Scholl said. “We didn’t handle Albany’s zone (defense) well until late in the game and didn’t get the ball to the high post enough.”
Binghamton was up 28-20 with 14:05 left in regulation but managed just one field goal the next 12 minutes against the Great Dane defense. By that time, the Great Danes were up 35-30 with 2:11 left to go. Senior forward, Viive Rebane, however, scored five straight points to tie the game at 35-35 with 49 seconds remaining. With 26 seconds left, she was fouled grabbing her 10th and final rebound of the game. Rebane sank 1-of-2 free throws and Albany called a time out with 18 seconds left. That set the stage for Henry’s heroics from the free throw line.
Senior guard Orla O’Reilly poured in a game-high 16 points, 13 of which came in the first half. Rebane also finished with 10 points to notch her 18th career double double. Sophomore guard Jasbriell Swain added 10 rebounds as did Julie Forster of Albany.
Binghamton heads to Maine on Saturday for a 4:30 p.m. game.
