VESTAL (WBNG BINGHAMTON) Junior Brian Kormondy netted the game-winner for visiting Delaware with one second left on the clock to propel the Blue Hens to a 10-9 victory over Binghamton (2-3) on Saturday from the Bearcats Sports Complex.

The Bearcats raced all the way back from a 7-3 deficit in the second half to tie things up at nine with three minutes remaining but were unable to move past Delaware who moves to 5-2 with the victory.

The Bearcats were led on offense by seniors Matt Springer and Michael Antinozzi who both tallied two goals and two assists on Saturday. Juniors JT Hauck and Tucker Nelson each tallied a pair of goals in a losing effort for Binghamton.

Down 7-3 nearly midway through the third quarter, Binghamton made a late charge by finishing out the stanza on a 4-1 run. Hauck got the action started with his goal at the 8:58 mark and Springer followed that up with a ripped shot that beat Delaware keeper Conor Peaks near post.

It was Hauck once again who cut into the Delaware lead with his spinning score at the 3:30 mark. Hauck took his defender right and then spun to his left where he fired a shot into the top corner to make the score 8-6. Following a caused turnover, Tucker Nelson buried his second goal of the afternoon off the feed from Springer.

The Bearcats evened the score at eight goals apiece when Paul O’Donnell beat Peaks with just about 14 minutes left in regulation. After a Kormundy goal, Antinozzi buried the equalizer with 3:18 left. For Antinozzi that was career goal number 71 on the late fourth quarter strike.

After a BU turnover, Delaware raced down the field and called timeout with four seconds left on the clock. Kormondy fired a long distance shot into the back of the net for the victory, leveling the all-time series between the two programs at one win apiece.

Once again, senior defender Shawn Needham had an outstanding day on defense, securing four ground balls and causing four Delaware turnovers. Senior Greg Cove also caused three turnovers himself on the back line. Freshman face off specialist Dan Mazurek won 12-of-20 faceoffs on Saturday, he also scooped up six ground balls.

In the first quarter, the visitors jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first eight minutes of play. However, the Bearcats responded with goals from Springer and Nelson to bring BU to within one, 3-2 with 1:36 left. Delaware finished out the quarter strong, scoring two goals just nine seconds apart to extend their lead to 5-2 after 15 minutes of action.

The second quarter was a defensive battle as neither team managed to score until Antinozzi’s rip from 12 yards out put Binghamton behind 5-3 heading into half. On the goal, Antinozzi became just the third Binghamton player in school history to record 100 career points.

Three players for Delaware recorded two goals apiece, including Kormundy, Logan Aunon and Jeff Heath. Goalie Conor Peaks made 10 saves for the Blue Hens.

Binghamton will next play on Saturday against Colgate at 1 p.m.. The Raiders are 5-1, most recently beating Boston on Saturday 7-5.
