Vestal, NY (WBNG Binghamton) After spending years in the CAA, a new experience awaits the Binghamton University wrestling team this weekend. The Bearcats will compete in their first EIWA conference tournament starting on Saturday at the University of Pennsylvania.
In dual matches, the Bearcats had a tough season finishing at 5-and-13. However, BU does have a handful of wrestlers looking to make a run towards an NCAA tournament berth.
That includes senior Cody Reed, who is looking to make it back to his third NCAA's. Coach Matt Dernlan believes if things go right, BU could have a number of weight classes represented in Oklahoma City this year.
"This isn't halloween. You're not going to knock on a door, and somebody isn't going to give you a piece of candy, you've got to go take something," said Dernlan. "So if our guys are in a taking mentality and are ready to go out and earn what they want. I think at '25, I think at '41, '74, '84, '97, heavyweight, they're all in position to make something special happen."
All those weight classes Dernlan believes BU has a chance to possibly make a run towards the NCAA's.
The good news, the EIWA does provide more chances for automatic bids to the NCAA tournament. In most weight classes, the top four or five wrestlers qualify with the top seven wrestlers qualifying at 197 pounds.
