OKLAHOMA CITY, OK (WBNG BINGHAMTON) Senior 197-pound Cody Reed pulled off a pair of upsets Thursday to advance to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Championships. Reed knocked off the No. 8 and No. 9 seeds to become just the second Binghamton wrestler to advance to the quarterfinals.
Junior 125-pound David White went 1-2 during the first day of competition to complete his first NCAA Championship.
Reed began his day by knocking off No. 9 Christian Boley of Maryland in a rematch of a 2012 NCAA first round bout. After a scoreless first period, Reed escaped Boley midway through the second to take a 1-0 lead. Boley did the same to Reed in third before heading to the one minute overtime. Reed escaped a pair of single-leg locks by Boley before securing a double-leg takedown in overtime to capture the 3-1 win and advance in the championship bracket.
The three-time NCAA qualifier then faced No. 8 Phillip Wellington of Ohio in the second round of the championship bracket. Reed displayed his balance and flexibility by escaping a single-leg lock and reversing Wellington to take a 2-0 lead midway through the first period. Wellington elected to start up in the second period and Reed escaped for a 3-0 lead. In the final period Reed was able to hold Wellington down and accumulate almost two minutes of riding time to advance with a 4-0 victory.
Reed faces top seed and top ranked Nick Heflin of Ohio State in the quarterfinals tomorrow morning. Reed is the second Binghamton wrestler to advance to the quarterfinals in the program’s Division I history. Justin Lister was the first Bearcat to accomplish the feat, advancing to the semifinals to become Binghamton’s second Division I All-American.
White began his day by falling to No. 12 Tim Lambert of Nebraska, 5-1. However, White bounced back with an impressive showing in a pigtail bout of the consolation bracket. The junior-transfer fell behind 2-0 to Corey Keener of Central Michigan, but worked himself into a cradle on top of Keener late in the first period. White finished off Keener by pinning him with 26 seconds left in the opening frame. White completed his first NCAA Championship by falling to Nick Roberts of Ohio State 10-5. White fell behind 5-0 in the first period, but pulled within 8-5 late in the third. However, it wasn’t enough as Roberts accumulated over two minutes of riding time to move on.
Day two begins Friday morning at 9 a.m. (ET) with the championship brackets.
