Vestal, NY (WBNG Binghamton) Junior pitcher Demi Laney and freshman catcher Taylor Chaffee have each picked up a weekly accolade from the America East Conference. Laney was named the conference’s Softball Pitcher of the Week while Chaffee repeated as the Rookie of the Week.

Laney went 2-0 in Binghamton’s weekend series sweep over Maine. She finished with an ERA of 1.56, struck out 15 batters and did not issue a walk. In her past three starts Laney has recorded one solo shutout and shared another shut out. Her record currently stands at 7-5 and she is tied for second in the America East with 98 strikeouts.

“I thought Demi had really good control of her pitches this weekend,” head coach Michelle Burrell said. “She played very well and the defense worked good behind her.”

This marks the first time Laney has been honored as the conference’s top pitcher. Senior pitcher Kate Price earned the honor back on Feb. 18.

Chaffee, meanwhile, earned her second straight Rookie of the Week award by hitting .714 in the series against Maine. She went 5-for-7 at the plate and also drew three walks. In addition to hitting a grand slam in the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader, Chaffee added three doubles during the weekend. She finished with an on-base percentage of .800 and a slugging percentage of 1.571.

“Taylor was very balanced in the box,” Burrell said. “I thought she did a good job in being selective and going after pitches. Taylor also did a good job behind the plate and really worked well with our pitching staff.”

Currently, Chaffee has a career-high, nine-game hitting streak. She is ranked fifth in the conference in batting (.318), tied for fifth in home runs (five), is seventh with 23 RBI and is also fifth with a .612 slugging percentage.

Binghamton has had a program-best three freshman take home Rookie of the Week honors so far this season. Sydney Harbaugh was picked on Feb. 18 while Lisa Cadogan took the award on March 11 and March 25. In addition, Cadogan was also the Player of the Week on March 18.

Up next for the Bearcats (18-11, 8-1 AE) is a non-conference doubleheader at St. Bonaventure on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
