Ithaca, NY (WBNG Binghamton) Jake Rinow scored the game-winning goal in the 75th minute, leading unbeaten Cornell (4-0-1) to a 2-1 win over Binghamton (2-3-1) in a non-conference men’s soccer game on Wednesday night at Berman Field. The loss snapped the Bearcats’ three-game unbeaten streak.
Playing against its third unbeaten team in the past five games, the Bearcats jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 50th minute on a goal by junior forward Vlad Finn. Junior midfielder Ben Nicholson fired a long ball past the Big Red defense and Finn proceeded to chip it over the keeper.
It took the Big Red just two minutes to strike back, however, as Jake Kirsch finished off a throw in by Peter Chodas. Patrick Slogic was also credited with an assist.
Rinow, meanwhile, was in the right place at the right time on the game winner. Slogic took a shot that deflected back to Rinow. He then fired it into the net.
The Bearcats refused to go quietly, outshooting the Big Red 4-0 in the final 10 minutes. In the final three minutes alone, Binghamton got off a pair of shots on goal. For the game, however, Cornell held a 16-9 advantage in shots.
“We were disappointed not to come away from tonight with a point or three,” head coach Paul Marco said. “We played good in spurts and got a great goal but (Cornell) was dangerous on throw ins tonight and got both their goals that way.”
Sophomore goalkeeper Stefano Frantellizzi made five saves.
