Vestal, NY (WBNG Binghamton) When Binghamton women's basketball coach Linda Cimino was hired last month, she vowed to make recruiting a priority. On Tuesday, Cimino officially received a recruiting chip in the form of the America East Tournament.
As was first announced on Monday, the Events Center will host the quarterfinals and semifinals of the 2015 and 2016 women's basketball tournaments.
On Tuesday, America East Conference Commissioner Amy Huchthausen visited campus to make the move official.
It's just the second time ever Vestal has played host to the America East tournament.
It's coming back for the first time since 2007 because the conference believes BU can help make the tournament even bigger and better.
"It was what institution could put together a marketing plan that could be successful? What institution had the local support for it to be successful?" said Huchthausen. "The community support in a place like Binghamton is really critical and I think the rest of our membership recognizes that."
"It'll be a chance to show off our great facility and to bring in local kids and show them we have the capability of hosting a big conference tournament here," said Coach Cimino. "Hopefully throughout the tournament we can bring in some of our top recruits and have them see the place filled."
The men's tournament is going separate from the women's tournament starting next year. The highest seed will host in every round in the men's tournament going forward.
