VESTAL (WBNG BINGHAMTON) Junior attackman Tucker Nelson was named America East men’s lacrosse Player of the Week Monday afternoon for his 10-point effort in Binghamton’s two games this week. Freshman outfielder Bridget Hunt was been named the America East Softball Rookie of the Week for April 7.

Nelson played a big role in BU’s 13-7 win on Sunday versus UMBC, registering two goals and four assists in the victory.

Nelson, who leads Binghamton in points (35) and assists (23) in 2014, began his week with a goal and three assists versus eighth-ranked Syracuse on Wednesday. He followed up Wednesday’s performance with a career-high six points in the Bearcats’ impressive six-goal victory over UMBC from Vestal yesterday. Binghamton outscored the Retrievers 9-1 in the final 30 minutes of play to jump to 2-0 in conference play. The last time BU started 2-0 in America East competition was back in 2006.

Hunt hit a team-best .429 (6-for-14) with two doubles, a triple and a home run in leading Binghamton to a 5-0 week. She scored five times and recorded a .929 slugging percentage. Hunt had a double and a home run in the series against UMBC and hit safely in all five games.

Hunt currently has a career-high, six-game hitting streak. For the season, she is batting .317 with a pair of home runs and seven RBI.

“Bridget did a great job this past week,” head coach Michelle Burrell said. “She has been working to make adjustments at the plate and it has paid off for her. She finds a way to get on base and make things happen.

Hunt is one of three rookies who have become full-time starters for the Bearcats. Freshman third baseman Crysti Eichner is hitting .308 while freshman outfielder Gabby Bracchi is hitting .294.

“I’m really excited with how much of an impact all of our freshmen have had so far,” Burrell said. “I know they will continue to improve because of the hard work they put in and how they approach the game.”

Binghamton (12-10, 3-0 AE) heads to Albany for an America East doubleheader Tuesday at 2 p.m.

In BU’s dominant second half Sunday, Nelson had a hand in five goals against UMBC, scoring two and dishing out another three assists. With his seven assists on the week, Nelson now has 50 career assists at Binghamton which is tied for second all-time in school history. In addition, he slid into the top-10 in points at BU with 71 in just 24 games played.

In 10 games this season, the Penfield high school graduate has recorded two or more points in each and every contest. He also carries a 24-game point scoring streak into Saturday’s matchup with Vermont which takes place at 1:30 p.m. from Virtue Field. The Bearcats are looking for their first 3-0 start in conference play since 2004 when they won all six conference games en route to a regular season championship.
