Walton, NY (WBNG Binghamton) Unatego's season got off to a rough start, getting blown out by defending Class C Section IV champs Chenango Forks in its opener. But since returning to the Spartans Class D competition, Unatego finds itself in a tie for first in the division.
That includes a win last weekend at Walton. The Spartans went down 6-0 to the Warriors, only to score 27 unanswered points to cruise to a 27-6 win.
Unatego went to the ground game this week, running for three touchdowns against Walton. That was a conscious effort by the team and the coaching staff.
"We're all butting heads, and a couple times we had a couple of breakdowns, but we came right back as a team to work out every little kink we could find," said Lucas DeJoy, the senior center and linebacker.
"The line plays with a chip on its shoulder a little bit. They're never really the biggest, but they have the biggest heart," said coach Frank Microni. "They do, they play hard. You know the paper was saying, you know they throw the ball all over the place and we're not running the ball very well. They wanted to come out [Saturday] and they wanted to prove they can run it, and they did a good job."
Unatego hosts Bainbridge-Guilford this Friday.
