The sport of wrestling is looking at possibly being excluded from the Olympics for the first time since 1900.

Earlier this week the International Olympic Committee voted to not include wrestling as a core sport in the 2020 Games in Brazil. A move that shocked many in the wrestling community, including those here in the Southern Tier.

Chenango Forks Wrestling Coach Rick Gumble has been part of the Olympic Development program for 30 years in the area. He said taking wrestling from the Olympics would certainly hurt the sport.

"When you're growing up and you're a little boy and you're practicing baseball, you want to play in the World Series. You aren't playing baseball to win the Olympic Gold Medal," said Gumble. "When you're in horse racing, it's the Kentucky Derby. When it's wrestling, it's the Olympic Gold Medal. The Holy Grail is in the sport of wrestling."

Gumble believes those with influence in the sport will continue to fight for wrestling to be included in those 2020 games. There still is a slim chance it will be included in those Olympics if it is selected as an additional sport.
