"Five-Time New York State Champion... Troy Nickerson!"
HE'S THE ONLY FIVE-TIME CHAMP IN NEW YORK HISTORY AND CHENANGO FORKS GRAD TROY NICKERSON HASN'T MISSED A BEAT SINCE JOINING THE CORNELL WRESTLING TEAM. TWO YEARS AGO, HE STEPPED IN AS A TRUE FRESHMAN AND FINISHED SECOND IN THE COUNTRY.
Troy says, "I was very confident in myself. My coaches were confident in me and I had really prepared myself well so I was expecting big things right from the start."
FOR A KID WHO WON A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP AS AN EIGHTH-GRADER, IT SHOULDN'T HAVE BEEN A BIG SURPRISE THAT NICKERSON SMOOTHLY MADE THE TRANSITION FROM HIGH SCHOOL TO COLLEGE WRESTLING. BUT IT WASN'T WITHOUT LEARNING A FEW LESSONS ALONG THE WAY.
"Guys are really physical when you get in and you're pounding heads with somebody. You know, the whole mentality. You got to be focused and willing to take a few lumps."
NICKERSON FOUGHT THROUGH SEVERAL LUMPS LAST YEAR. HE MISSED THE FIRST HALF OF THE SEASON WITH A BACK INJURY AND WAS LESS THAN 100-PERCENT FOR THE NATIONAL TOURNAMENT. NO PROBLEM, NICKERSON PLACED THIRD AND EARNED HIS SECOND STRAIGHT ALL-AMERICAN HONOR.
Coach Rob Koll says, "We've had some pretty talented kids come through here and he's as good as any of those kids. We need to just keep him healthy this year and keep him fresh."
NICKERSON ENTERS HIS JUNIOR SEASON RANKED NUMBER TWO IN THE COUNTRY AT 125 POUNDS. BUT DON'T THINK HE'S SATISFIED WITH THE CASE FULL OF HONORS HE'S ALREADY COLLECTED.
"Over the summer I've really worked on getting stronger, improving a lot of my speed and my conditioning is great right now. It's probably the best it's ever been."
IF THAT'S THE CASE, TROY NICKERSON COULD HAVE HIS HAND RAISED AS A NATIONAL CHAMPION. IN ITHACA, JUSTIN HOROWITZ, ACTION SPORTS.
