Sidney, NY (WBNG Binghamton)
There are many reasons for the success of the Sidney boys basketball team.
A thousand point scorer running the offense.
Loads of senior leadership.
As the Warriors head to the sectional semifinals on the court, we head into the stands to profile one of the unique fan displays in this week's action sports spotlight.
" Since I teach phys ed here and I have all the kids in the school, they like follow basketball. It seems everybody at the school whether they have talent or not wants to try out for basketball. "
If basketball is king in the town of Sidney, then consider these 2 the clown princes of the crowd.
Rob McLean and Justin Bartz may not be on the floor for the Sidney basketball team, but you've definitely seen them.
They are the faces behind Brazee head, that giant homage to Warriors head coach Mike Brazee.
McLean says, " One day we just kind of thought about it because we had seen the Syracuse, how they made the Boeheim head. My friend and I just decided to get a picture of him and just print it out real big and make a goofy head out of him I guess. "
The work was about 2 days of putting all the moving parts together on the giant head, but the reaction has been even bigger.
Even at times requiring the help of the inspiration for Brazee head.
" A lot of people love it, especially Mr. Brazee. He definitely. There was one time we kind of got in trouble for it and he really protected us. "
Yes he's not only aware of it's existance, coach Brazee has literally signed off on the use of his face in the stands.
" In Unatego that first night, one of the kids that had it wanted an autograph, so I figured I could autograph it. "
The Warriors path to the sectional finals gets a little tough.
Despite being ranked #2 in the state, they are just the 5 seed in the class "C" bracket.
That means they won't have a home crowd for Saturday's game at Groton or for tomorrow's game at Moravia, but maybe a little Brazee head in the stands is all they'll need.
