Binghamton high school senior Debbie Cao really enjoys a challenge.
And loves to accomplish great things.
She carries a 95 average while taking mostly international baccalaureate classes.
Cao says her favorite subject is English because it gives her a chance to express herself.
But she'll take a different path once she gets to college.
She's going to study pharmacy, hopefully at the University of Buffalo.
"I find it quite interesting as well. My siblings are also doing pharmacy so we plan to open a family business one day."
Outside of the classroom, she's one of the stars of the Patriots volleyball team.
She started playing with her siblings as a little girl and continued to play in high school.
Cao says sports are a stress reliever for her.
And she enjoys volleyball because it is truly a team sport.
"The feeling of working with a team definitely having everyone work as a team, doing their own part to succeed and it's not an individual sport. You definitely have to work together and bond in order to succeed together."
Her coach says she strives to be the best not only in the classroom, but on the court as well.
And this season, she's been pretty close to perfect.
Coach Lisa Quackenbush says, "She is the team leader in assists, she is also the team leader in aces and she has an overall best serving percentage for us. She has a 96 serving percentage so she has perfection when she plays."
Cao says she wants to succeed in all that she does so she doesn't become just another face in the crowd.
"It's part of growing up. It's part of finding who you are and expressing it. You're trying to find that thing that makes you unique from everyone else and I find that expressing myself through academics, through sports, through my church, it's something that holds my identity in this world."
And that's why Debbie Cao is this week's academic all-star.
