VESTAL (WBNG BINGHAMTON) Freshman Bri Arthur scored the game-winning goal with six seconds remaining in regulation as Binghamton women’s lacrosse slid past visiting Quinnipiac (0-7) 9-8 on Sunday afternoon. With the win, BU set a new program record for victories in a season, improving to 6-3 on the year.
The Bearcats had five different goal scorers and were led by Allie Rodgers and Bri Arthur who each netted hat-tricks on the afternoon at the Bearcats Sports Complex.
Binghamton was rolling in the first half, capitalizing on goal scoring opportunities early and often. The Bearcats separated from a early 1-1 tie by spurting on a 6-0 run that elevated them to a 7-1 lead. Allie Rodgers scored three of Binghamton’s first six goals and freshman Valerie DeNapoli’s goal with 4:18 left in the first gave them their largest lead of six.
However, Quinnipiac was able to get one back just before halftime to gain some momentum, trailing 7-2 at intermission. From there, the Bobcats went on a lengthy 6-0 run themselves in the second half and took the lead on Kyra Ochwat’s fourth goal of the game. Ochwat netted the goal with just over two minutes left on the clock and snatched the 8-7 lead.
BU responded over thirty seconds later, tying the game up at eight apiece on Arthur’s second goal of the game. Arthur snapped a 32-minute scoreless streak with her timely score with 1:25 left in regulation.
With seconds to go Bri Arthur went to ground, and was awarded a free position shot. She rocketed it into the back of the net with only seconds remaining, and the game was wrapped up again by Arthur who won the ensuing draw control.
Binghamton was able to win the battle on the ground, picking up 29 ground balls to Quinnipiac’s 21. However, Quinnipiac controlled the draw circle winning 11-of-19 draw controls.
Both teams struggled on free position shots on Sunday. The Bearcats were 3-for-10 while the Bobcats went 1-for-7. Denapoli was outstanding in the midfield for BU, recording a goal,eight ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers.
Kara Parfumi registered six saves in goal, playing all 60 minutes in the net for the Bearcats. The Bearcats win marks the first time they have ever beaten Quinnipiac (1-6 all-time).
The Bearcats will play two games on the road next week, beginning at Marist on Wednesday, March 26 at 12:00 p.m.. They close out the week with their America East opener, playing at Albany on Saturday afternoon.
