Vestal, NY (WBNG Binghamton) Binghamton (3-10-5, 1-3-3 AE) was unable to overcome a two-goal halftime deficit and lost 2-1 to Albany (5-10-4, 3-3-1 AE) in an America East men’s soccer game on Wednesday night at the Bearcats Sports Complex. Despite the loss, the Bearcats still clinched the No. 6 seed in the upcoming conference tournament and will head to Hartford on Saturday for a first-round game at 7 p.m.

Against the Great Danes, however, Binghamton fell into an early hole. First, the Bearcats committed a defensive miscue which resulted in an own goal for Albany in the 18th minute.

In the 31st minute, Bernardo Mattos made it 2-0 when he scored from close range. Jonathan Interiano and Leonardo Rodriguez were each credited with an assist.

Binghamton came out quickly in the second half as junior forward Steven Celeste netted his team-high fourth goal of the season in the 51st minute. He too scored from close range, with the assist going to freshman midfielder Mike Kubik.

Although the Bearcats held the momentum for the rest of regulation, they were unable to come up with the equalizer.

“Give Albany credit,” head coach Paul Marco said. “They played quite well in the first half. I was proud of the way our guys responded in the second half but we got into a hole pretty quickly early on.”

Binghamton outshot Albany 10-7 for the game.

In goal, sophomore Stefano Frantellizzi recorded a pair of saves.
