BINGHAMTON (WBNG BINGHAMTON) In their quest to get back to the Class A state championship game, the Maine-Endwell girls faced very few obstacles this season. One of them was Vestal. The teams split the regular season series 1-1, but in this one, for the Section IV crown, it was all Spartans.

Maine-Endwell rode a 15-0 run to open the second quarter to a 67-46 victory in the Class A Section IV championship.

"You know it's going to be a good game," said head coach Sonny Spera after the game. "You know Vestal matches up, they're strong inside, they have great perimeter play. They don't have a real weakness."

As good as Vestal is, M-E knew it had to make very few mistakes. And that's exactly what happened.

"Vestal is well-coached, well-schooled...they don't make a lot of mistakes," Spera said. "I thought we had to make sure we didn't make a lot of mistakes. I think that worked out."

"When we talk to each other and work as a group, we're really able to shut down another team and force a lot of turnovers," said senior Julie Yacovoni.

Now the Spartans are one step closer to getting back to a state final.

"That means a lot, because everybody on this team is really committed, and we want to go as far as we can," Yacovoni said.

"We try to stay focused on just one step. The biggest mistakes we can make is a) to say we were there last year, we should be there this year; or b) look past -- and you can't look past Vestal, they're a very good team," said Spera.

"I thought our kids stayed focused, they were good in practice, we executed what we wanted to do. I thought we were able to get some opportunities for ourselves, and I thought we made some free throws tonight."

They're one step closer, but not quite there yet. M-E will be back in action Tuesday.
