Town of Union, NY (WBNG Binghamton) Two wins is all that separates the Maine-Endwell girl's basketball team and a state title. It's the same position they were in a year ago, but if you ask the Spartans, they aren't looking back at last year.
And after this past week, there's little reason to look back if you're M-E. After knocking off the top-team in the state last Tuesday by 21 points, the Spartans came back and beat Peekskill by 15 on Saturday.
Those are two impressive results on their way back to the state semifinals. M-E coach Sonny Spera credits the success to their ability to work together.
"I think the kids believe in each other, and I think they've developed that trust, that chemistry to work together and to try and stay in the moment and focus on the task at hand," said Spera. "One possession at a time, don't look past anybody, respect your opponent, those kind of things I think have helped us."
Next up for the Spartans, a semifinal date with Pittsford Sutherland from Section Five. That game is at 1:30 on Friday at Hudson Valley community college.
