Vestal, NY (WBNG Binghamton) Some of the top wrestling teams and wresters in the nation will be at the Events Center Sunday. The B-U wrestling team is hosting the Jon Kaloust open, bringing in team's like Cornell and three-time defending national champions Penn State.
That'll be quite a test for a mostly young B-U team to start the year. The Bearcats return NCAA qualifier Cody Reed, but welcome in 7 true freshman to the program. One of those is Chenango Forks grad Kyle Kelly.
He was part of a recruiting class that was ranked 14th in the nation, but there's a lot for some of the young guys to learn.
"They've really responded well, and I think the great thing about that is during the recruiting process you're selling these kids on your vision, your philosophy, your expectations," said second-year coach Matt Dernlan. "So coming in, their eyes were wide open, they knew what they were getting into, they knew the expectations, so they jumped in with both feet."
"We're no different than any other school heading out to nationals. We put guys there every year, we've got All-Americans on the wall over there," said senior Cody Reed. "Some guys coming here don't expect themselves to reach those expectations, so you've got to let them know that they can hit those expectations here."
The event begins Sunday at 9 a.m.
