NEW YORK (AP) - Opening statements are set to begin on Wednesday in the retrial of ex-New York Senate leader Dean Skelos and his son on corruption charges. Skelos and his son, Adam, were convicted in 2015 of extortion, conspiracy and bribery. Dean Skelos, a Republican, was sentenced to five years in prison. His son got 6½ years. A federal appeals court later tossed the conviction, citing a Supreme Court ruling that narrowed the legal definition of corruption.

NEWBURGH, N.Y. (AP) - New York City is spending $1 billion to fix gushing leaks in a massive underground tunnel that brings water from reservoirs in the Catskills. About 18 million gallons a day escapes from the 85-mile-long tunnel known as the Delaware Aqueduct. Some of the worst of those leaks are 55 stories beneath the Hudson River, where workers using a cylindrical boring machine are digging a separate, 2.5-mile tunnel that will bypass those leaks. That work is expected to be finished in 2022.

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - Proposals to overhaul teacher regulations and add more school zone speed cameras in New York City are on the table as New York state lawmakers enter the final days of the legislative session. The Senate and Assembly hope to adjourn for the year on Wednesday. But they plan to vote on hundreds of bills before they can head home to campaign before the fall elections.

NEW YORK (AP) - A key cooperator for the prosecution in a criminal case that grew from a development project known as the Buffalo Billion could soon testify. Lawyers revealed Tuesday that Kevin Schuler was listed as a likely witness in the federal corruption trial over upstate New York construction projects. Schuler pleaded guilty in May to conspiracy and wire fraud charges and said he helped rig the bidding process so his employer would get a lucrative Buffalo project.
