BINGHAMTON (WBNG) -- Students at Thomas Jefferson Elementary School in Binghamton did their part to give back to the community during the holiday season.

The school collected non-perishable items to donate to the Community Hunger Outreach Warehouse (CHOW).

Teachers say this program is a good way to teach kids about giving back to the community.

"It's giving without expecting anything in return, and they can -- no matter how small they can just really feel like they matter, and it's giving back to our own community and I think that's so important for the kids to learn," said Social Worker Amy Bennett.

"We're all part of the community and, you should do things that you think treat others like you want to be treated," Fifth grader Collin Gibb said.
