JOHNSON CITY (WBNG) -- State Senator Fred Akshar had an opportunity to learn about healthy school lunches at Johnson City elementary and intermediate school on Friday.
Sen. Akshar toured the kitchen and ever helped serve lunch to students.
The school district uses the BOCES Farm to Table program to bring in fresh fruits and vegetables from local producers.
"We have a strong agricultural in our region and Farm to School is a great way to address some of the health issues that kids are facing with obesity and other types of issues like that," said Erin Summerlee, Director of the Food and Health Network of South Central New York.
Members of the Food and Health Network of South Central New York also made a stop in Johnson City. Their job was to run a taste test of New York dehydrated apple chips. Students judged the chips and were able to vote on whether they liked the healthy treat.
