BINGHAMTON (WBNG)-- The Girl Scouts of NYPENN Pathways honored New York State Assemblywoman Donna Lupardo as the 2017 Woman of Distinction on Thursday night.
The celebration at the Holiday Inn in Binghamton focused on her achievements.
As a legislator, Lupardo has worked on issues key to strengthening the Southern Tier economy, protecting the environment, and public health and safety.
Before she was elected in 2004, Lupardo worked with the Mental Health Association on teen health issues.
The annual Woman of Distinction event supports the Girl Scouts' mission of building confidence and character in girls as they look toward their future.
Each year they select a woman who serves by example through her own personal and professional leadership.
"It's kind of humbling to think that maybe I would be someone that they would look to, but I think it's important for them to see women in leadership roles and that anything is possible if they put their minds to it," Lupardo explained.
The Greater Binghamton area has more than 2-thousand girl scouts.
All proceeds from the event stay local to support girls programming and needs.
