(WBNG) -- Authorities say four people were sent to the hospital Sunday evening, after a multi-vehicle crash on Route 12, outside the city of Norwich.

According to the Chenango County Sheriff's office, the crash happened in front of Lindy's Ice Cream Shop.

“A vehicle, operated by Amber Ryan, age 31, Norwich NY, made a left turn into the path of a northbound vehicle; operated by Randolph Smith, age 61 from Earlville NY,” according to sheriff's officials.

Ryan was sent to UHS Wilson Hospital with minor injuries, according to deputies.

The sheriff's office says the front seat passenger in Ryan's vehicle, Nicholas Ohl, 26, of Norwich, was taken to UHS Wilson with serious injuries.

Smith was taken to UHS Chenango Memorial Hospital to be treated for minor injures, officials say. Deputies say Robin Smith, the front seat passenger in Smith's vehicle, was also transported to UHS Wilson with minor injuries. Two rear passengers in Smith’s vehicle were uninjured.

Norwich and Oxford fire departments, as well as the New York State Department of Transportation assisted the Chenango County Sheriff's office at the scene.

A portion of Route 12 was shut down after the crash for several hours.
