United Way of Broome County gives $1.6 million in grant funding

(WBNG) -- The United Way of Broome County on Monday announced the recipients of its 2017-2018 Community Priorities Grant and Healthy Lifestyles Coalition programs.

According to the organization, the Community Priorities Grant Program helps local nonprofits address issues important to Broome County residents, such as meeting basic needs, preparing youth and helping senior citizens.

The Healthy Lifestyles Coalition Grant Program aims to decrease childhood obesity within the Theodore Roosevelt Elementary School area. The United Way said the area on Binghamton's north side has the highest obesity rate among students in the city of Binghamton and has been referred to as a "food desert."

Broome County Urban League - $24,000.00

Catholic Charities of Broome County - $166,911.60

Crime Victims Assistance Center - $128,562.55

Deposit Community Center - $46,000.00

Family and Children’s Society - $42,000.00
