BINGHAMTON (WBNG) - The 2017 NHL Draft kicked off on Friday night with the first round, but it was earlier on Friday when the draft noise started. The Rangers picked up the seventh overall pick in the draft along with defenseman Anthony DeAngelo from the Arizona Coyotes in exchange for center Derek Stepan and goalie Antti Raanta.

Then it was time for the New Jersey Devils to make this year's first overall selection.

1. New Jersey Devils - Nico Hischier C QMJHL - Halifax

Hischier is an 18-year old center. He recorded 86 points, including 38 goals in 57 games played for the Halifax Mooseheads in 2016-17. Hischier is the highest Swiss-born player ever taken.

It's unlikely Hischier will spend anytime with the Binghamton Devils in the AHL but the possibility is there.

7. New York Rangers - Lias Andersson Forward Sweden - HV 71

The Rangers used the pick it attained in the Stepan trade to acquire Andersson out of Sweden. Andersson played in Sweden's top-tier men's league, the SHL, where he scored 19 points in 42 games.

8. Buffalo Sabres - Casey Mittelstadt C High School - Eden Prairie (Minnesota)

Mittelstadt is a high school center out of Minnesota. He also played for the USHL's Green Bay Gamblers and is committed to the University of Minnesota.

21. New York Rangers - Filip Chytil - C Czech Republic - Zlin

The Rangers used it's second round selection on Chytil, a center out of the Czech Republic. Chytil split time between the Czech Republic's top league and junior team in 2016-17.

The 2017 NHL Draft continues Saturday starting at 10 a.m.
