CHOOSE 607: The story behind 'Notfa'

Posted: Updated:

AFTON, N.Y. (WBNG) -- Afton spelled backward is "Notfa." The statement by itself may sound silly, but it has helped create an identity for the small community.

More than 20 years ago, the Afton County Club started using a slogan that read "Afton spelled backwards is Notfa."

It all started at when an avid golfer named Ellis Martin approached the owners of the club with an idea on how to advertise. It has now become the unofficial slogan of Afton.

"It has been a good thing for the community," said Afton Golf Club Co-Owner Guy Dawson. "Because it doesn't just speak of the golf course, even though we promote it through the golf course. It tells everyone who sees the commercial that Afton is 'notfa' lets go out there."

12 News will be live from the Afton Fair this Friday. We hope you tune in from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. to learn more about the fair and the village of Afton.
