BINGHAMTON (WBNG) - New York Met Juan Lagares joins the Binghamton Rumble Ponies Tuesday night for a rehab assignment as Binghamton hosts the division-leading Trenton Yankees. The Yankees enter the day 12 games in front of the Ponies in the Eastern Division.
Lagares is rehabbing a left thumb fracture he suffered on June 15. In 47 games with the Mets this season, Lagares is hitting .269. He also spent time rehabbing in Binghamton in 2016.
Tuesday night is the start of a three-game series between the two teams with the best records in the Eastern League and manager Luis Rojas is thrilled to have Lagares in the lineup, who he got to know as an assistant coach in Savannah in 2010.
"He just made the transition from infield to outfield (in Savannah in 2010), said Rumble Ponies Manager Luis Rojas. "We got to spend a lot of time together as he was just becoming an outfielder. He's just a natural athlete. Nothing new for him. He clicked right away in the outfield and I'm just glad to be with him on the same roster (again), even though it's a rehab assignment."
First pitch is set for 6:35 Tuesday night. Lagares is playing center field and batting second. Robert Gsellman is also making his second rehab appearance with the Ponies Tuesday and will start on the mound.
