Ponies split doubleheader with Thunder behind Oswalt's stellar performance

GAME 1

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (AP) -- Corey Oswalt tossed a two-hit shutout, leading the Binghamton Rumble Ponies to a 2-0 win over the Trenton Thunder in the first game of a doubleheader on Thursday.

Oswalt (8-4) struck out six to get the win.

Binghamton scored its runs when Gustavo Nunez and Matt Oberste hit RBI singles in the second and third innings.

Daniel Camarena (1-1) went six innings, allowing two runs and four hits to take the hard-luck loss in the Eastern League game. He also struck out one and walked three.

The Thunder were blanked for the third time this season, while the Rumble Ponies' staff recorded their 16th shutout of the year.

GAME 2

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (AP) -- Nick Solak homered and had two hits, and Jose Mesa allowed just three hits over five innings as the Trenton Thunder beat the Binghamton Rumble Ponies 4-1 in the second game of a doubleheader on Thursday.

Mesa (1-0) allowed one run while striking out seven to get the win.

Trailing 1-0 in the second, Binghamton tied the game when Tyler Moore hit a sacrifice fly, scoring David Thompson.

Trenton answered in the next half-inning, scoring three runs to take the lead. Zack Zehner hit a two-run double and Billy Fleming hit an RBI single en route to the three-run lead.

P.J. Conlon (8-8) went four innings, allowing four runs and seven hits in the Eastern League game. He also struck out two and walked one. Cody Carroll pitched two scoreless innings for his first save of the season.
