Solar eclipse glasses sold out many places, where to buy them

Walmart in Johnson City told 12 News at 1 p.m. Thursday that it had approximately 170 pairs of the glasses. They are located in the Lawn and Garden section of the store. Employees said the store will not order more glasses, once they run out.

TOWN OF CHENANGO (WBNG) -- The solar eclipse on August 21 has people rushing out to buy the special glasses needed to view the rare event.

The Lowe's in the town of Chenango and in Vestal tell 12 News they are out of stock. The stores also say they don't plan on having new shipments come in for the glasses.

The nearest Lowe's with glasses in stock is the home improvement store in Norwich.

The store had 200 pairs left as of Wednesday evening.

"They've been selling really quickly so what we have left is I don't anticipate them lasting too much longer," said Lowe's general manager Joe Sam.

The eclipse can be dangerous to watch. Experts suggest getting a pair of glasses that have a special film. They will reduce the amount of light coming through and will make it safer to view.

Those who pay admission for the solar eclipse viewing event at Kopernik Observatory in Vestal will be provided glasses.
