OUAQUAGA, N.Y. (WBNG) --  A man from Orleans County has died after a fishing accident in the Susquehanna River near the Ouaquaga Bridge fishing access in the Town of Colesville Wednesday evening.

Joseph Kapral Jr., 56, of Albion, N.Y. was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Broome County Sheriff's Office.

Authorities say the accidental drowning happened when Kapral was out fishing with a friend.

The two waded out near some rapids and Kapral fell into deeper current, officials said.

“His fishing partner jumped in to try and pull him out but after several attempts was unable to do such,” according to the sheriff's department.

Deputies say the friend was eventually able get Kapral to land where he performed CPR, but because there was no cell phone reception in the area, the friend had to leave to call for emergency help.

“The subsequent investigation revealed the victim suffered a heart attack which contributed to his drowning,” authorities said.

The investigation has been ruled accidental drowning.
