BINGHAMTON (WBNG) -- The 105th Annual St. Mary of Assumption Bazaar kicked off Friday with all the home-made Italian classics.
The volunteers have been preparing for the festival for about three months. They have been making home-made gnocchi, eggplant parmesan, meatballs and desserts. One of their desserts even has a special ingredient in it.
The Cannoli is hand-made by the volunteers with a traditional recipe. They put wine in the dough mixture before they run it through the pasta machine and fry it in the oil. They say it adds flavor that they believe is unique. On the morning of the festival, they make the Cannoli filling, so it is fresh for when the public has them.
The same celebration to honor the Virgin Mary is also being held in Italy this month. The volunteers and cooks say that they are bringing the Italian culture and traditions from across the sea all the way to Binghamton.
The festival is being held August 11-12, with the procession on Sunday.
