BINGHAMTON (WBNG) - The Binghamton Rumble Ponies are closing in on a 2017 Eastern League playoff berth and picked up a huge addition on Thursday. The New York Mets promoted first baseman Peter Alonso from Class A-Advanced St. Lucie to Double-A Binghamton.
Alonso was the Mets' second round pick in 2016 and is ranked as the organization's tenth-best prospect by MLB Pipeline. The 22-year-old first baseman has spent the entire 2017 with St. Lucie, hitting .286 with 16 home runs and 58 RBI.
The Ponies are in Portland on Thursday night. The team's magic number to clinch a postseason berth is two. First pitch is set for 7 p.m.
