Literacy Volunteers of Broome-Tioga Counties is a non-profit agency serving adults who wish to increase their English language reading, writing and basic math skills. Through classes and one-to-one tutoring, members assist adult learners who need to increase their computer, employment skills and/or work towards earning a high school equivalency diploma.
Approximately 14% (one in five) of the adult population in Broome and Tioga counties are functionally illiterate. Which means they don't read well enough to understand a newspaper or fill out a job application.
The agency is holding an event to kick off the nationwide Adult Education and Literacy Family Week which is from September 24 through the 30. The 2nd Annual Family Fun and Literacy Awareness day will be on Saturday, September 23 from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Broome County Public Library on 185 Court Street.
The agency is also celebrating 50 years and is holding a 50th Anniversary Gala on Saturday, October 21.
