STORY FROM SUNDAY, OCTOBER 1
APALACHIN, N.Y. (WBNG) -- The Binghamton Bearcats golf team is hosting the 6th annual Matthews Auto Intercollegiate at The Links at Hiawatha Landing Sunday through Monday.
90 golfers from 17 teams are partaking in this year's tournament. While the Bearcats won it all back in 2014, Saint Bonaventure returns as the defending champion.
"I really feel pretty positive about our chances this week," said Binghamton head coach Bernie Herceg. "The guys are well-prepared, and last year, we had a chance to win the tournament, and we didn't come through in the last three holes. The year before, when we won it, we played very strong the last three holes. So our objective here today, day one, is to really just put ourselves in a position so we're in that last group going into tomorrow's round and then let's see what happens."
Sophomore Ryan Rodriguez shot a 1-under, 71 in the opening round to position himself in a tie for second heading into Monday's final round.
As a team, Binghamton is currently in seventh place with a score of 300, just five shots off the lead.
The final round tees off Monday, October 2 at 9 a.m.
