Guthrie Weight Loss Center

Guthrie's Weight Loss Center uses a holistic approach to help patients who are looking for a permanent solution to obesity. Weight loss surgery, also known as gastric surgery or obesity surgery, is an effective weight loss tool when combined with healthy lifestyle changes.

Successful gastric surgery or weight loss surgery requires patients to thoroughly prepare for and commit to healthy, lifelong, lifestyle changes. The specialized staff at Guthrie's Weight Loss Center provide guidance, before and after surgery, to help patients develop healthy eating habits and sustainable exercise programs. Support for patients' emotional health is also provided before and after weight loss surgery.

There are multiple types of obesity surgery procedures performed; however, no one procedure is perfect for everyone. Each type of weight loss surgery carries different risks, provides different degrees of weight loss, and requires unique lifestyle changes that make it attractive for some patients and undesirable for others.

The Guthrie Weight Loss Center offers the following procedures:

  • Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Band (LAP-BAND®)
  • Laparoscopic Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy
  • Laparoscopic Roux-en-Y Gastric-Bypass

Frequently Asked Questions

Question 1: What are the types of bariatric surgery that are offered at Guthrie?

Answer 1: At the Guthrie Weight Loss Center, our fellowship-trained bariatric surgeon offers three surgical weight loss options: Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Band, Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy and Laparoscopic Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass. Each option comes with its own benefits and side effects; our surgeon will work with you to decide on the best course of action, based on your medical conditions, overall health and desired weight loss.

All weight loss surgery options are offered laparoscopically, or minimally invasive. When compared with open surgery, minimally invasive surgery offers several advantages, such as less pain, a shorter hospital stay, fewer infections and an earlier return to daily activities. Our program also offers revisional surgery for patients who have had weight loss surgery in the past.

Question 2: Is weight loss surgery right for me?

Answer 2: If you are severely overweight, weight loss surgery could be right for you. To qualify for weight loss surgery you must meet a minimum Body Mass Index (BMI), which is a rough estimate of how much excess weight you carry in comparison to someone of your same sex and height who is considered to have a healthy weight. You may be a candidate for weight loss surgery if:

You have a Body Mass Index greater than 40, or
You have a Body Mass Index greater than 35 with certain obesity-related health problems, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, sleep apnea, degenerative joint disease, or other obesity-related health problems
Patients with Body Mass Index of 30 - 40 and certain associated health problems may qualify for the laparoscopic adjustable gastric band

Weight loss surgery could be right for you if you:

Are at least 18 years of age · Have tried more conservative weight loss measures such as dieting, exercise programs, or medically supervised weight loss programs
Are committed to abstaining from tobacco and illegal substances (recreational drugs)
Have a healthy support system that can help you succeed after surgery (friends and family)
Are committed to eating healthier, staying physically active, and living a healthier lifestyle
Are committed to following up with our bariatric program after surgery, so that we may work together to help you achieve the best results!

Question 3: What sets your bariatric program apart from all the other programs within the area?

Answer 3: Guthrie has been accredited as a Comprehensive Center by the American College of Surgeons and American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. Our weight loss team has developed a fully integrated program to help you after surgery, including:

Nutrition counseling with our registered dieticians for guidance on healthy eating.

Psychological support from our licensed psychologist.
Nurses and physician assistants specializing in the care of obese patients
Private bariatric patient rooms in the hospital

Answer 4: Guthrie Weight Loss Center staff will work with you and your insurance carrier to determine your coverage.
