BINGHAMTON (WBNG) -- Renovations for the Lee Barta Community Center on Liberty Street are underway.
Binghamton Mayor Rich David joined State Senator Fred Akshar, Visions Federal Credit Union and The United Way of Broome County to break ground on the expansion project Wednesday.
When complete, the project will provide new neighborhood resources like a computer lab, tutoring programs and different classes.
Mayor David says this is just one example of the resurgence of Binghamton's north side.
“With this expansion project officially underway, we are continuing to invest in the north side, historically one of the most disadvantaged areas in our region, to bring hope and opportunity to residents," Mayor David said.
The $500,000 project is expected to triple the size of the community center and be completed in about five months.
The center is named in memory of Binghamton Police Officer Lee Barta, who was shot and killed while on duty more than 20 years ago.
