Walmart celebrates 25 years in Vestal, long-time employee shares her story

VESTAL (WBNG) -- The Walmart in Vestal is celebrating 25 years in Broome County. It was the first of its kind to be built in the area.

Some of the employees have been there since the beginning. Built in 1992, the store has seen its share of difficulties.

"We've had more than one flood, snowstorms you know that have crippled," Terri Cook, the Personnel Coordinator at the Vestal Walmart said.

Cook was the second person hired when the store first opened.

"Honestly I didn't know a whole lot about Walmart because we didn't have any Walmarts in this area, you know we had to go out to Rochester for training," Cook explained.

Cook has seen the store undergo both challenges and remodeling, and she's not the only one who's stayed with the company through it all.

"Just a family thing, and there's actually 11 of us that still work here at Walmart." Cook added. "Lynette was, I was the second associate hired, she was the 5th associate hired  um so we've been here for 25 years had our babies together, watched them go off to college."

She's grateful to have been part of it all for more than two decades.

"The time goes fast, you learn a lot, and the biggest thing is the opportunity that Walmart provides you," Cook said.

She says she's planning to continue to stick around and work hard.

"I'm going to retire from here, in a few more years, but I definitely plan to stay here for the rest of my career," Cook added.

Thursday at the store employees were giving out free cupcakes to customers, to celebrate the 25 year mark.
