TOWN OF UNION (WBNG) -- Whitney Point claimed its fourth consecutive field hockey state championship, defeating Carle Place, 1-0, on Sunday at Maine-Endwell High School. Both Maine-Endwell and Vestal lost in their respective state title games.
Class A State Championship: Ward Melville 1 - Maine-Endwell 0 (F/OT)
Class B State Championship: Lakeland 5 - Vestal 0
Class C State Championship: Carle Place 0 - Whitney Point 1
It's exciting," said head coach Nicole Huston after leading the Lady Eagles to a fourth straight state title. "I'm a little overwhelmed. I really didn't fathom for. I was excited for one [state title], when one happened, so now that we have four, I don't really know how to take that, other than these girls work incredibly hard for me, and they play out of season, and we go constantly. They understand pressure, but they also understand how to have fun."
"Sierra [Hand] was actually going to take the shot because she didn't hear me calling for it, but as soon as I saw her carrying the ball, I was like, 'Oh my gosh, I'm open. I have to have this goal,'" said junior forward Leanne Bough, who scored the game-winning goal with less than four minutes to go. "The first year we won [a state title] in 2014, it was crazy. We actually beat Carle Place, 1-0, in the last couple minutes of the second half, and having it happen again three years later is just unbelievable."
