1987 World Series MVP Frank Viola named Ponies pitching coach

Posted: Updated:

BINGHAMTON (WBNG) - Frank Viola is joining the Binghamton Rumble Ponies coaching staff as the team's new pitching coach. Viola spent the past four seasons as the pitching coach with the Las Vegas 51's. Viola and former Rumble Ponies pitching coach Glenn Abbott are switching places for the upcoming season, with Abbott headed to Las Vegas, the Binghamton Rumble Ponies confirmed with 12 Sports Tuesday.

Viola sent out a tweet on Tuesday saying he is excited to be closer to family. He is a three-time All-Star, the 1987 World Series MVP and the 1988 AL Cy Young Award winner.

Rumble Ponies owner John Hughes is excited about what Viola can add to Binghamton.

"Frank 'Sweet Music' Viola is always welcomed in Binghamton," said Binghamton Rumble Ponies owner John Hughes. "I think it's just another win for the community. Glenn Abbott was a great guy, pitched for the Yankees and a lot of other organizations, but anytime you can get a World Series MVP to come teach your guys how to pitch, and hang out with ya in Binghamton, it's gotta be another win."

The 2018 Rumble Ponies season kicks off on April 5.
