ENDICOTT (WBNG) -- No. 3 Tioga (9-2) dropped a back-and-forth contest to No. 2 Maple Grove (11-1), 32-27, in the Class D state semifinals Friday night at Union-Endicott's Ty Cobb Stadium.
"This was a special group," said Tioga head coach Nick Aiello after the loss. "There was never a time going out to practice when I didn't want to be there and that I didn't want to be coaching these kids. I never heard anything from them negative. Anything we told them to do, it was complete effort."
Former 12 Sports Athlete of the Week, Nick Klossner (Tioga senior RB/DB), caught nine Connor Hutchinson (Tioga senior QB/LB) passes for 164 yards and three touchdowns.
"Besides the turnovers, they played their hearts out, and they played tough, physical football," added Aiello. "Great group of seniors going through Tioga Central school right now, and they represent our school very, very well. For them to step up and put the work in and want to get to this point, I couldn't be more proud of them."
Maple Grove senior running back and defensive back, Nicholas Fabrizio, rushed 20 times for 100 yards and three touchdowns.
While Tioga's season comes to a close, Maple Grove (Section VI) will now play Cambridge (Section II) in the Class D state championship on Friday, November 24 at 12 p.m. inside Syracuse's Carrier Dome.
