GLENS FALLS, N.Y. (WBNG) -- For the third time in the last five years, Owego girls volleyball (19-0) is the best team in New York. The Indians knocked off the Hudson Falls Tigers in straight sets (27-25, 25-22, 25-19) to be crowned Class B state champions Sunday afternoon at Cool Insuring Arena.
"These kids were in the weight room all summer long," said Owego head coach Brittney Race. "They were in the gym all summer long. They made it a goal of theirs to get back here, and not only to get back here, but to take it all this year, and they battled every step of the way this season, and I couldn't be more proud of them."
#5 Brinn Shaughnessy - Senior Captain/Outside Hitter - 20 kills, 12 digs
"I feel on top of the world," said Shaughnessy after the victory. "Honestly, after last year coming home second, that was the worst feeling. And we've been working all season so that didn't happen again. Luckily, we pulled it out in three, and it was a great match. It felt amazing."
#16 McKenzie Hart - Senior Captain/Libero
#10 Grace Thomas - Junior Captain/Setter
The duo combined for 36 assists and 12 digs.
"During preseason, Brinn [Shaughnessy] and I would spend hours on the track running, and we would tell each other, 'We're not giving up until we get back here and get this chance to fight again,'" said Hart following the win. "And that's exactly what we did, and it's the best feeling in the world right now."
"I love it," added Thomas. "I love Owego volleyball. It's amazing to be a part of this team, and I just love everything about it."
