WHITNEY POINT (WBNG) - Elaina Burchell signed her letter of intent Tuesday afternoon to continue her field hockey career at the University of Albany. Burchell is one of the most decorated student-athletes in Whitney Point history. She spent six seasons on varsity, starting in seventh grade. Burchell scored 103 career goals and helped the Eagles capture four-straight Class C State Championships. This year Burchell earned third team National All-American honors.
Burchell says she chose Albany because it's where she believes she'll continue to love playing field hockey.
"I've always had a dream as a kid of playing Division-I, but choosing Albany, they have always had the mindset of we don't want to ruin your last four years of field hockey and make it a job. They want you to have fun. They want you to go out there and just continue to love the sport."
"She is fun," said Whitney Point head field hockey coach Nicole Huston. "She has challenging days, but there are other days you just love her. You want to scoop her up and make her your own kid. So having a player like that, it's fun in the program, but it also helps with our younger student-athletes because she is able to teach them at the same time because she was so young when she first came up."
Burchell plans on studying business at Albany.
