VESTAL, N.Y. (WBNG/AP) -- Joel Hernandez scored 25 points and Raiquan Clark 23 and LIU Brooklyn defeated Binghamton 74-66 on Friday night.
Hernandez was 10 of 16 from the floor, leading LIU in scoring for the sixth straight game, and had eight rebounds and four assists. Clark made all six of his field-goal attempts and 11 of 15 free throws. The Blackbirds (5-8) shot 56.5 percent and won their first road game this season in six tries.
"I just didn't feel the urgency tonight, and that was probably the most disappointing part," said Binghamton head coach Tommy Dempsey. "And part of that comes with when you're not playing well, we just never got in a stretch where we ever really got it going to create the energy that we needed to overcome them, take the lead and try to put them away. We just never really seemed to find that stretch of the game where we played really well."
Dusun Perovic scored 13 points and Everson Davis 10 for the Bearcats. Binghamton (8-6) was without Thomas Bruce, the team's second-leading scorer, who was out with a foot injury.
"Like coach said, we came out flat and that kind of went over in the second half, and we couldn't really get it going," said Davis. "But had a chance. We're just going to have to regroup. The real season starts in January, so we're going to go home, get a few days off, come back refreshed, ready to get at it again."
LIU led 30-29 at halftime but Binghamton used a 5-2 spurt to take a brief lead early in the second half. The Blackbirds then went on a 21-9 run over the next 6:45 with nine points from Clark and six from Hernandez to lead 53-43. The Bearcats cut it to three with four minutes left. Neither team scored for the next 3 1/2 minutes with the Blackbirds making 8 of 10 free throws after that to seal the win.
