Family's Christmas display shines bright through dark times

VESTAL (WBNG) -- The Gardner family has put up their big Christmas decoration display for years. So when life took a different course, they didn't stray from tradition.

If you drive past John Gardner's home on Kimble Drive in Vestal this time of year, you'll see a world of Christmas right in their front yard, which is filled with lights and inflatable characters.

"We have kids that their families can't go home at night without driving by to look at the display," said John's son, Jedd Gardner.

But this year, they kept everything up for someone close to their hearts who could not celebrate Christmas this year.

John's wife, Kathy, was diagnosed with cancer in November and passed away on December 10, right before her favorite holiday.

"She loved Christmas...that was her thing," said John.

While they could not have Kathy with them for the holidays this year, the family still wanted to remember her love for children, Christmas, and more importantly, her display that brought happiness to her neighborhood each year.

The Gardners will be holding a memorial service Saturday, December 30 at 2:30 p.m. at the Elk's Lodge in Vestal for anyone who may wish to attend.
